DETROIT, Michigan, USA, 14 July 2022 – The Special Olympics Unified Cup , presented by Toyota, is pleased to announce commitments from an extraordinary lineup of celebrities and athletes who agreed to lend their voices in support of the hundreds of Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners participating in the Unified Cup.

In its ongoing quest to support the community, Krapohl Ford & Lincoln will set up a 30-foot drive-in movie screen on their lot and entertain area families on Saturday, June 25, with Disney’s latest animated feature, “Encanto.”

Team Michigan’s message on and off the field shined bright throughout the week, cheering on their competitors and one another. The delegation will travel home Sunday with 19 medals in tow, including 10 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze.

This June, Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) is excited to celebrate one of the biggest events of the year - the 2022 State Summer Games - featuring in-person competition on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. As the first major return since the 2019 State Summer Games, SOMI is excited to announce a large-scale event for our athletes and community members.

Take the Field at Ford Field for Special Olympics Athletes

Have you dreamed of your chance to take the turf at a professional sports stadium? Make that dream a reality all while contributing to the Inclusion Revolution.  Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) is pleased to announce the inaugural year for two unique fundraisers: Motor City Yoga and Motor City Blitz. The two separate events will happen on the same day, May 14, 2022, at the home of the Detroit Lions: Ford Field. All proceeds will benefit sports and health programming for athletes with intellectual disabilities in and around the Detroit area, allowing them to participate in regional and state competitions at no cost to them – all while spreading the message of unity across the state!

Record Setting Polar Plunge Season!

This year, the Polar Plunge season raised $1,450,000 million for Special Olympics Michigan. Money raised allows athletes to compete in sports and health programming year-round at no cost. 

Who We Were Made To Be: An Educators Commitment To Inclusion

For most Special Olympics supporters brave enough to take the Polar Plunge, one icy jump is more than enough. Not for Holland Christian Staff member, Ty Van Wieren. The high school paraprofessional has committed his personal and professional life to promote the message of his inclusion. It was his students that inspired Van Wieren to plunge five times, one in honor of each student unable to take the dive themselves.
