State Competitions

Special Olympics Michigan holds more than 700 local and regional competitions each year in addition to six state-level competitions and four district basketball tournaments. Information on local and regional competitions can be found on the events calendar. State-level competition information can be found below.

District Basketball

March 7, 2020 at various locations

Approximately 1,800 athletes and 350 coaches/chaperones participate in the district basketball tournament each year. The district basketball tournament is the qualifying tournament for the State Basketball Finals.

State Basketball Finals

March 20-21, 2020 at Calvin University in Grand Rapids

The 2020 State Basketball Finals will include both traditional and Unified competition in the same tournament for the first time. Previously, the Unified Basketball Finals was held as a separate tournament. Competition features senior male, female and skills athletes.

State Summer Games

May 28-30, 2020 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant

The State Summer Games is the largest Special Olympics Michigan event with 2,900 SOMI athletes along with an additional 3,400 coaches, volunteers, chaperones, family members and spectators attending each year. 

Ten types of competition are offered at the State Summer Games including athletics, bocce, bowling, gymnastics, horseshoes, powerlifting, swimming, weightlifting, volleyball, developmental athletics and motor activity training program.

State Fall Games

TBD Fall 2020 in southeast Michigan

The State Fall Games presented by Real Estate One Charitable Foundation offers a high profile, exciting event for approximately 1,600 Special Olympics Michigan athletes to showcase their skills in Flag Football, Soccer, Cycling, Softball, Golf and Kayaking.

State Poly Hockey & Unified Bowling Finals

More than 1,100 athletes, coaches and chaperones from 49 counties take part in the Poly Hockey & Unified Bowling Finals each year.

State Winter Games

January 26-29, 2021 in the greater Grand Traverse region

Approximately 900 Special Olympics Michigan athletes to showcase their skills in alpine skiing, cross country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing and speed skating. Events take place in the greater Grand Traverse area.
