State Competitions

Special Olympics Michigan holds more than 700 local and regional competitions each year in addition to seven state-level competitions and four district basketball tournaments. Information on local and regional competitions can be found on the events calendar. State-level competition information can be found below.

State Summer Games: Postponed

Due to concerns related to the spread of the coronavirus, and from the Guidance of Special Olympics International (SOI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) has made the decision to postpone the State Summer Games. The State Summer Games is SOMI’s largest event with 2,900 athletes and an additional 3,400 coaches volunteers, chaperones, family members and spectators attending each year. We are currently working on rescheduling and modifying the State Summer Games with a tentative placeholder for the week of July 20, 2020. The Games will most likely be a modified one- or two-day event with the location and sports offered still to be determined. We will update you as more information becomes finalized.

State Fall Classic

August 15, 2020 in Caledonia and Brighton

The State Fall Classic features two state finals competitions in Softball and Soccer with events taking place in both southwest Michigan (Caledonia) and southeast Michigan (Brighton)

The State Fall Games presented by Real Estate One Charitable Foundation offers a high profile, exciting event for athletes to showcase their skills in Cycling, Golf and Kayaking.

State Winter Games

January 26-29, 2021 in the greater Grand Traverse region

Approximately 900 Special Olympics Michigan athletes to showcase their skills in alpine skiing, cross country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing and speed skating. Events take place in the greater Grand Traverse area.

District Basketball

March 7, 2020 at various locations

Approximately 1,800 athletes and 350 coaches/chaperones participate in the district basketball tournament each year. The district basketball tournament is the qualifying tournament for the State Basketball Finals.
