Champions Take the Field: Special Olympics Michigan & Detroit Tigers to Host State Softball Tournament in Canton

Athletes gear up for 2025 SOMI State Softball tournament

Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) has teamed up with the Detroit Tigers and Gallagher for the annual State Softball Tournament at the Canton Sports Center.

This inspiring, day-long event, scheduled for Friday, August 22, will bring together hundreds of athletes and coaches on 39 teams from across Michigan to compete, connect, and celebrate the spirit of inclusion through the game of softball.

“This tournament is a powerful reminder of what our athletes are capable of,” said Tim Hileman, President & CEO of Special Olympics Michigan. “Every game, every play, and every cheer from the sidelines helps build a more inclusive and unified Michigan.”

In addition to the tournament, more than 30 athletes will take part in a skills clinic, a training program designed to teach athletes the fundamentals of softball.

As part of a continued partnership with SOMI, the Detroit Tigers are extending the celebration beyond the diamond. Each athlete will receive a special gift from the Detroit Tigers and Gallagher. Champions from this year’s tournament will attend an upcoming Detroit Tigers game in late September, where they will enjoy a behind-the-scenes experience—watching batting practice and meeting MLB players during warm-ups.

“This event is a celebration of determination, inclusion, and the extraordinary achievements of these athletes,” said Christopher Mead, Chief Marketing Officer at Gallagher. “We are proud to collaborate with the Detroit Tigers and Special Olympics Michigan, two organizations that share our commitment to building stronger communities and empowering athletes of all abilities around the world.”

The State Softball Tournament is one of seven SOMI state-level competitions that offer athletes opportunities to shine and communities a chance to come together in support of inclusion, respect, and athletic achievement.
