SpartanNash has been a long standing partner of Special Olympics Michigan for 35 years. Since 1985, SpartanNash has contributed nearly $9.1 million to support the State Summer Games and year-round athletic training of more than 23,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. SpartanNash has raised the $9.1 million through associate and community support.
In addition to financial contributions, SpartanNash supports the State Summer Games with hundreds of volunteers who are associates, retirees, friends, families, vendors and independent retailers. Many of these volunteers step up year after year, several proudly serving since 1985. SpartanNash also provides meals for all volunteers throughout the State Summer Games. Before the State Summer Games, SpartanNash sells medallions in all D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, VG's, VG's Fresh Market, Glen's, Glen's Fresh Market, Forest Hills Foods and ValuLand stores, as well as independent stores across Michigan.
SpartanNash Healthy Athlete of the Year
SpartanNash is very interested in helping community members improve their health and wellness. In 2007, Spartan Stores started its Healthy Athlete of the Year program to recognize one Special Olympics Michigan athlete each year who exemplifies a healthy life-style and the Special Olympics Oath. The award is given to an athlete at State Summer Games who strives for wellness, a balance of the mind, body and spirit and is a leader among other athletes. SpartanNash features that athlete on one of its Spartan brand products.
