Thanks to the Water Warriors – the Presenting Sponsor of the State Poly Hockey Finals!

Water Warriors

Ann Plegue of the Water Warriors and Special Olympics Michigan President & CEO Lois Arnold hold a check presented by the Water Warriors at opening ceremonies during the State Poly Hockey Finals.

The State Poly Hockey Finals on November 21 attracted about 500 athletes as well as hundreds of coaches, chaperones and family members to the Capital Centre Sports Complex in Lansing. A huge thank you to the Water Warriors! They presented Special Olympics Michigan with a check for $50,000 during opening ceremonies! The Water Warriors were also on hand to greet athletes and sign autographs.

Since 1991, the Water Warriors have been hitting the waves to help support Special Olympics Michigan athletes. Who are the Water Warriors you ask? They are a group of men and women who love being on the water but also love the feeling of satisfaction they get from actually seeing the athletes that they help so much. MORE

Special Smiles Logo

The 2009 Special Olympics Michigan State Poly Hockey finals lit up the Capital Centre in Lansing, Mich. on Nov. 21, 2009. The athletes experienced a lot of joy and excitement during the event, which is obvious from the smiles on their faces. It’s important to ensure that the athletes protect those wonderful smiles. That’s where the ‘Special Smiles’ program comes in. Special Smiles offers dental screenings, health education and prevention services, and refers athletes to potential sources of treatment and follow-up care. At a Special Smiles event, dental professionals provide oral screenings, oral health education and personal prevention products, and individually fitted sports mouth guards, if needed. MORE

Athlete Spotlight: Michael Robert Marsiglia

Michael Robert Marsiglia
Michael Robert Marsiglia

By Robert Sawruk
When selecting an athlete to spotlight, most of the time I will watch the competition, pick out an athlete who catches my eye and then write about them. Michael Robert Marsiglia of Area 23 (southeast Wayne County), broke the mold on my usual selection process. I walked into the State Poly Hockey Finals on Nov. 21 and was barely in the door when Michael came up with a big smile on his face and extended his hand to me and introduced himself. MORE
