A Letter from Our President/CEO Lois Arnold:
As we begin a new year and decade, I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make 2009 a successful year for Special Olympics Michigan. We had an increase in the number of athletes. We now have more than 17,000 athletes who take part in more than 400 competitions. We also offer a great new Young Athlete Program for 2-7 year olds, with more than 300 registered. These events offer experiences that have a positive effect on the lives of our athletes and their families.
In 2009, the 10th year for our Healthy Athletes program, we provided 1,758 health screenings to athletes! The program includes seven areas; Special Smiles, Opening Eyes, MedFest (sports physical), Healthy Hearing, Fit Feet, and Fun Fitness and Health Promotion.
Thank you for the more than 20,000 great volunteers statewide! You help our athletes by empowering them and celebrating their successes.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors and supporters. Our programs wouldn’t exist without you.
There are many exciting things happening in 2010:
- Our State Winter Games Feb. 2-5 will see an increase in athlete participation of nearly 10%.
- Hundreds of brave souls will experience the thrill of the chill in 19 Polar Plunge fundraisers around the state! Every year we see an increase in the number of Polar Plunges, participants and money raised.
- In July, we will be sending 64 Michigan athletes to Nebraska for the USA National Games!
- We welcome our new Chairman of the Board Terry Cramer.
Thank you for all you do for the children and adults with intellectual disabilities Special Olympics Michigan serves statewide! Together, we make a difference in athlete’s lives.
