  • There is only one way to start the Special Olympics Michigan 2011 State Summer Games and that's with the traditional Capitol Steps Kick-off Torch Lighting Ceremony in Lansing on Thursday, June 2 at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to attend! Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) members will light the torch with an athlete. Then 14 LETR members will spend the next nine hours running the torch from the Capitol in Lansing to Mt. Pleasant, in a relay run, leading up to Opening Ceremonies that night at 6:30 p.m.
  • The 2010 Inspirational Athlete of the Year Nicholas Boyd will have the honor of running the last leg of the torch run in Kelly/Shorts Stadium to light the Flame of Hope at Opening Ceremonies. He will be presented with a running jacket at Closing Ceremonies from the Law Enforcement Torch Run and become an honorary member. The 2011 Inspirational Athlete of the Year will be announced during Closing Ceremonies.
  • Our Presenting Sponsor and Statewide Gold Medal Sponsor Spartan Stores is back for the 27th year! Spartan Stores supports athletes, provides volunteers and feeds hundreds of volunteers throughout the games.
  • Opening Ceremonies will include a Coast Guard flyover provided by United States Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City!
  •  There will be plenty of pageant royalty, including Miss Michigan Katie LaRoche and more than a dozen other title holders from around Michigan! Many of them will be on hand for the Celebrity Autograph signing on Friday, June 3 from 3 - 4:30 p.m. at Central Michigan University's Event Center Atrium.
  • Our Spartan Stores 2010 Healthy Athlete of the Year Kassandra Pratt will lead the athlete oath at Opening Ceremonies. Amy will also be signing limited edition trading cards during the Celebrity Autograph Signing. She is featured on limited edition 24-pks of Spartan brand water. The Spartan Stores 2011 Healthy Athlete of the Year will be announced during Opening Ceremonies.
  • "Rev It Up Ride" leading up to Closing Ceremonies on Friday night, June 3. The "Rev It Up Ride" will bring motorcycle riders from all across Michigan to Mt. Pleasant. Many of them are members of the Michigan Moose Association but anyone is welcome to participate by paying the entry fee. The ride raises funds for Special Olympics Michigan.
  • Once again we will have King and Queen of the 2011 State Summer Games will be announced during Closing Ceremonies.
  • The Healthy Athletes® Village provides free health screenings to all athletes. This year it includes Opening Eyes®, Special Smiles®, Healthy Hearing, MedFest® and Spartan Stores "To Your Good Life".
  • During this year's State Summer Games, parents and children are not only encouraged to have fun but also to participate in the Young Athletes™ Program. The Young Athletes™ Program introduces children ages 2-7 to Special Olympics Michigan, before they become eligible to compete at age eight.
  • Special Olympics Nebraska athlete David Steffan will perform live for Special Olympics Michigan athletes, coaches, chaperones and volunteers at Opening and Closing Ceremonies. David has struggled with mild cerebral palsy since he was born, but gained confidence by competing in Special Olympics events. He continued to push through tough times and has become a talented performing artist. Through his music, David shares his struggles and successes with other athletes in hopes that they will be inspired to achieve their goals too. David's song "Let Me" is one of his most popular. David performed at the Special Olympics 2010 USA National Games in Nebraska in July of 2010. You can view video of his performance at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtNSGqpYaNM
