Shoppers at corporate and independent Spartan Stores throughout Michigan have the opportunity April 29-May 19 to help 2,500 Special Olympics Michigan athletes from nearly every county in Michigan compete at the 2012 State Summer Games presented by Spartan Stores May 31-June 2 on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.

D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Glen's, VG's and Valu Land locations throughout Michigan are selling medallions for $1 that will directly benefit Special Olympics Michigan athletes. The medallion features athlete Nicholas Cross, from Wayne, Michigan who was named the "Spartan Stores Healthy Athlete of the Year" at the 2011 State Summer Games. The medallions also come with coupons that provide shoppers with $3.00 savings on products. The coupons are valid April 29 - June 2.

Nicholas Cross will also be featured on the packaging of Spartan Brand Cranberry Juice Cocktail during the month of May. Spartan produced 25,000 bottles that will be on store shelves at D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Glen's, VG's and 375 independent grocery locations throughout Michigan.

The annual "Spartan Stores Healthy Athlete of the Year" award recognizes a Special Olympics Michigan athlete who exemplifies a healthy lifestyle and the Special Olympics Oath -"Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." The athlete must strive for wellness, a balance of the mind, body and spirit. The athlete should eat a well-balanced diet and dedicate time to exercise

outside Special Olympics training and competitions. Each year athletes from around the state are nominated. The winning athlete for 2012 will be announced at Opening Ceremonies during the State Summer Games presented by Spartan Stores on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Approximately 6,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers will be at the 2012 State Summer Games May 31-June 2 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.

Special Olympics Michigan President & CEO Lois Arnold said, "The State Summer Games are a highlight of the year for our athletes. In addition to having the opportunity to compete and earn awards, they have a tremendous opportunity to benefit from health screening programs during the Games. Spartan Stores is an important partner in support of all of these efforts."

"Spartan Stores is committed to Special Olympics and raising funds for the Summer Games," said Jeanne Norcross, Vice President Corporate Affairs of Spartan Stores. "We salute the participating athletes, families, volunteers, retail vendors and customers who are involved with Special Olympics. Their participation and support ensures the games' success each year."
